TANDEM SKYDIVE
WHAT IS A TANDEM SKYDIVE?
Tandem jumping is a perfect introduction to real skydiving without you having to deal with the actual deployment of the parachute, you enjoy the thrill of Free fall, while being harnessed to one of our highly skilled instructors (tandem masters). You exit the aircraft at 11000 feet, securely strapped to your tandem master who will control the free fall element of your skydive. You will have an approximate 40 second free fall and roughly 5 minutes under the open parachute.
WHO CAN DO A TANDEM JUMP?
Anyone that is healthy and has strength to lift both your legs for landing purposes. You should disclose all and any health issues that could potentially be a concern prior to your booking.
Maximum passenger weight for men is 100 kg and for women is 85kg.
The minimum weight for a tandem passengers is 45kg.
WHY DO I HAVE TO INDICATE MY HEIGHT AND WEIGHT?
Our parachutes have weight limitations. Please be aware that we will request that you weigh yourself in front of us should we feel that your weight is a concern. You could run the risk forfeiting all payments if you exceed our weight limits stipulated.
We do reserve the right to decide whom to allow to complete a tandem skydive upon several factors: weather conditions, person’s height, weight and fitness level and our ability complete the jump safely. Any physical or mental incapacity must be mentioned before making the booking.
SHOULD I REQUEST FOOTAGE OF MY TANDEM JUMP?
We strongly recommend that you do as so many people wish they had after their jump. The jump video has proved to be the best thing out there for showing to your children, grandchildren, etc.
Our skilled camera men video your tandem jump experience, including the plane ride, the exit and free-fall (he exits with you and flies a few metres in front of you) and then your landing. Please note: a camera person can only take footage of one tandem passenger in flight. Each tandem passenger wanting footage, must book a camera person with us.
CAN I DO MY TANDEM JUMP DURING THE WEEK?
We do offer tandem jumps during the week: Monday to Friday. We need 7 days to organise it. The prices differ to the weekend as we have to get our staff out. For prices please check under weekday: https://skydivepretoria.com/tandem-skydive/
WHAT IF THE CAMERAS FAIL?
Our cameramen are professionals and will do their utmost to ensure high quality footage. However, equipment can and will fail. Should the equipment fail to record your jump, we will refund you on the footage payment you made – you will not get a re-jump, unless you pay for it.
WHAT SHOULD I WEAR?
Please dress comfortably: jeans, t-shirt, tekkies/running shoes/sneakers. Ladies: v-neck t-shirts, or low-cut tops will reveal your “cleavage” so we suggest something more appropriate. For winter we do suggest that you dress warm. It can get cold on the way to 11,000 ft. We do request that you tie up long hair.
DO I NEED TO KNOW ANYTHING?
You will be given a briefing that covers the basics of free fall body position and what you should do to ensure that you get the most fun possible from your jump. You’ll be fitted with a harness – ready to skydive.
WHAT EQUIPMENT IS USED?
Tandem equipment has a few differences from the normal sport skydiving rigs. All tandem skydiving systems use a drogue parachute, which is deployed shortly after leaving the plane in order to slow the freefall speed of two people down to that of a single skydiver. This is necessary for proper parachute deployment, lengthening the duration of your jump, and allowing the skydivers to fall at the same speed as videographers. Tandem skydiving systems also use larger main parachutes (400 square feet and larger) to support the extra weight of two passengers.
ARE THE INSTRUCTORS CERTIFIED?
Tandem instructors are required to pass an instructor certification course for the system they jump before skydiving with students. PASA (Parachute Association of South Africa) requires each potential instructor to have over five hundred individual skydives and three years of skydiving experience. Individual manufacturers’ certification courses usually have additional requirements.
CAN I SKYDIVE IF I AM DISABLED?
Disability is not necessarily a barrier. Please contact and inform us with all the relevant information so that we can advise you before securing the booking.
CAN I TAKE MY OWN GO-PRO OR CAMERA?
No person is allowed to take any camera equipment of any kind in the aircraft, unless such a person is a qualified skydive camera person.
I WEAR SPECTACLES/ CONTACT LENSES. WILL THIS BE A PROBLEM?
No. Goggles to fit over spectacles will be provided, and these will securely retain your spectacles in place. Goggles will also protect contact lenses and prevent them from being displaced.
WHAT IF THE WEATHER IS BAD ON THE DAY OF MY JUMP?
All aviation activity is mostly dependent on suitable weather conditions. We assess the weather on the day as weather predictions are not accurate.
We are at the skydiving centre from early hours and will update all our clients from 07:00/07:30 onwards or simply send us a whatsapp on 081 499 5739 before you leave for our premises.
Should your jump not take place because of weather, air traffic control, aircraft problems or any other reason out of our control, we will be more than happy to offer you a re-book or full refund.

ACCELERATED FREE FALL
ACCELERATED LEARNING FREEFALL - WHO CAN JUMP?
Anyone that is healthy. You should disclose all and any health issues that could potentially be a concern prior to your booking. Our parachutes have weight limitations. The max allowable mass of an AFF student is an athletic 95kg. Should your mass be above limit you run the risk of forfeiting your payment for that jump.
We do reserve the right to decide whom to allow to do the AFF course upon several factors: weather conditions, person’s height, weight and fitness level and our ability complete the jump safely. Any medical history must be mentioned before making the booking.
HOW DO I GO ABOUT STARTING THE AFF PROGRAMME?
You will need to book a week in advance. The number of students doing a Level 1 skydive are limited to 4 per day. Instruction begins just after 07:00 on a Saturday morning. Please be there at the latest around 06:45 so we can do some paper work before hand. This is in order for the instructors to give sufficient attention to each participant.
Please note that we cannot guarantee what time you will jump as there are factors that we cannot control (eg weather, airport traffic and so on). We thus request that you schedule the whole day to be on the drop zone, at least until 19:00 that evening.
For your following levels, please book by sending an email to info@skydivepretoria.com. We will then inform you of your jump time. If you are on load 1 we suggest you show up an hour before, so your instructor can brief you. If you are on load 2 or following please be here 2 hrs to latest 90 min before your jump as it might happen that your instructor could be on loads before.
As a student jumper you must be prepared to be at the club the entire day for each time you schedule to jump. Bring a book and make yourself comfortable at our club. Sometimes it is necessary and appropriate to repeat a level, in which case the jump will need to be re-done and paid for.
WHAT IS THE MAXIMUM AGE TO START THE AFF COURSE?
We request that you supply all necessary information regarding your age, weight general health and fitness level before making your booking. Any person over the age of 40 years is advised to visit us over a weekend so that our instructor can meet with you and access your suitability to start the course.
HOW OLD MUST I BE BEFORE I CAN SKYDIVE?
You must be at least 16 years old. Persons younger than 18 years will require written and signed consent from their legal guardian.
IS THE JUMP COURSE GROUND SCHOOL SUFFICIENT TO LEARN HOW TO SKYDIVE?
Yes. You will learn everything you need to, in order to perform a safe skydive. You will not learn everything about skydiving, which is actually impossible – but you will learn increasing amounts by engaging with the sport and spending time at the drop zone.
HOW OFTEN DO I HAVE TO JUMP?
While you are a student, an absolute minimum of 1x per month but really we need for you to be pushing harder than that – for your own safety. The more you skydive, the quicker you will learn, and become more confident. Jump ‘currency’ is a very important safety factor in our sport and therefore it is important to jump as often as possible to remain current.
WHAT ABOUT HEAD PROTECTION?
Students are required to wear a hard helmet which will be issued to you with your parachute.
WHAT EQUIPMENT DO I NEED TO START SKYDIVING?
None of your own. Our club provides all the equipment you will need while you are a student. Once you progress off student status you will need to consider buying your own equipment.
HOW MUCH WILL THE EQUIPMENT COST ME?
This is an extremely rough guide. Before you buy any equipment speak to your instructors at the DZ: You can buy good used equipment for around R10,000 – this will include a harness, a main parachute, and a reserve parachute but not an AAD. An AAD will price between R2000 and R12000 depending on its age. A helmet will cost between R500 and R1500, and altimeter in the range of R800 – R1200 and jump suit between R1000 and R3000.
AFF FINISHED - WHAT NOW?
Once you have completed the AFF programme you will be required to do 2 conversion jumps on club gear. Then, the best thing is to start the Intermediate Skills Programme (ISPs) as laid out by our association immediately. The Programme, in which you will get one on one coaching, will teach you some more advanced skills to manoeuvre in the sky as well as under the canopy. Once you have completed the ISPs and some other requirements you can then apply for your A license.
